A Self-Calibrating Halo-Based Group Finder: Application to SDSS

Abstract We apply a new galaxy group-finder to the Main Galaxy Sample of SDSS. This algorithm introduces freedom assign halos galaxies that is self-calibrated by comparing catalog complementary data. These include clustering data and measurements total satellite luminosity from deep-imaging present constraints on galaxy-halo connection for star-forming quiescent populations. The results group differ in several key ways previous catalogs halo-occupation analyses. transition halo mass scale, where half contain central galaxies, at M h ? 10 12.4 ?1 ? , significantly higher than other constraints. Additionally, width predominantly occurs over narrower range mass. Quiescent low-mass are more massive centrals same mass, but this difference reverses above find scatter log M * fixed ?0.2 dex halos, agreement with estimates, rises sharply lower masses. masses assigned good weak-lensing estimates galaxies. discuss possible improvements made clear first application publicly available.
